ઉતારો બહુ જ સૂચક છે ઃ ‘‘India and her history have given ample proof of the prac- ticability of the religion of non-violence... Indians need not regard this rcligion of Ahimsa as an innovation introduced by Gandhiji. Their Vedas and Upnishads had preached that religion. The entire spirit of India’s civilization and religion was in consonance with that ideal. It had also been acknowledged by the greatest thinkers in the world that their Vedas were the highest wisdom of humanity, and that, that wisdom was summed up in that one word ‘Ahimsa.' “અહિંસા ધર્મ તરીકે વ્યવહારુ છે એવી પુષ્કળ સાબિતી હિંદ અને હિંદના ઇતિહાસે આપી છે... અહિંસા ધર્મને ગાંધીજીએ નવીન શોધ તરીકે દાખલ કર્યો એમ માનવાની હિંદવાસીઓને તો જરૂર નથી જ. તેમના વેદ અને ઉપનિષદોએ એ જ ધર્મનો બોધ કર્યો હતો. હિંદી સંસ્કૃતિ અને ધર્મનું આખું તત્ત્વ આ આદર્શને અનુકૂળ હતું. દુનિયાના મોટા વિચારકોએ પણ સ્વીકાર્યું છે કે તેમના - હિંદીઓના - વેદ એ માનવજાતનું ઊંચામાં ઊંચું જ્ઞાન છે અને એ જ્ઞાન - એ ડહાપણને એક શબ્દમાં સમાવીએ તો તે 'અહિંસા' શબ્દમાં આવી જાય છે.” બીજો પુરાવો સને ૧૮૫૭ના બળવાને જ અંગે મળી આવે છે. અહિંસાના તે પ્રસંગે બનેલા એક બનાવની ધી ઇન્ડિયન સોશ્યલ રિફોર્મર'ના તંત્રી શ્રી નટરાજન સરખા સ્વતંત્ર વિચારકે આપેલી હકીકત મારી માન્યતાને ટેકો આપે છે. અલ્હાબાદ યુનિવર્સિટીવાળા પ્રોફેસર અમરનાથ જહાએ ‘અહિંસા’ની વિરુદ્ધ માઇસોરમાં આપેલા વ્યાખ્યાનના ઉત્તરમાં તા. ૧૯મી ઑક્ટોબર ૧૯૪૦ના અંકમાં શ્રી નટરાજન કહે છે : ‘‘Mr. Jha’s diatribe against the plea for non-violence and his offensive characterisations of it, will not find acceptance among thinking men. There are no two pursuits more contradictory to each other than the pursuit of truth and pursuit of war. We wonder if Prof. Jha has come across the story of the hectic Mutiny bays, of the Sadhu who, when he felt the cold point of a bayonet on his body, opened his eyes, smiled and extended a friendly hand to his assailant, exclaiming, ‘Thou also art He.'
