ટૂંકી માંદગીના ઉલ્લેખ હતા. પોતાના જમાઈ અને તેના મૃત્યુ વિષે લખતાં લખે છે : "They had gone to Dr. Rajan's place on his repeated invitations that they should stay with him for sometime to enable him to X-Ray Papa and help a proper diagnosis of her case. The man went there in perfect health, and morbidest imagination could not have forcasted the event. He had left Rangoon in the midst of last year to join Papa and take my place as nurse. He was wonderfully attached to her and served most diligently until a few days before his death. Death is a dear friend, quite true, and not a frightful enemy as men suppose. But then, we all fight so vigourously against him on his approach, and employ all the knowledge of the ancient and the modern science to drive the friend away, that the truth is quite forgotten just when we ought to remember it most.. . It is not grief, but darkness that is around me. I am still praying for light. I do not complain for my share of humanity's lot. Do pray for me." ૮૮ એ લોકો છે. રાજનને ત્યાં ગયાં હતાં. પાપાને એક્સ-રે લેવડાવવા તથા તેના રાગનું ચક્કસ નિદાન કરાવવા પિતાને ત્યાં આવીને રહેવાનું તેઓ કહ્યાં જ કરતા હતા. જમાઈ ત્યાં ગયા ત્યારે પૂરેપૂરા તંદુરસ્ત હતા. કલ્પનામાંય ખ્યાલ ન આવે કે આવું બનશે. પાપાને મળવા માટે અને તેની સારવારના કામમાંથી મને છુટા કરવાને થાડા મહિના પહેલાં જ એ રંગૂનથી આવ્યા. પાપા ઉપર એની બહુ પ્રેમ હતો અને લગભગ મરતાં સુધી એણે એની ખૂબ જ ચાકરી કરી. મૃત્યુ એ પ્રિય મિત્ર છે, લાકે ધારે છે તેવું ભયંકર દુશ્મન નથી, એ વાત તદ્દન સાચી છે. પરંતુ એ આવે છે ત્યારે આપણે બધા જ એની સામે એવી લડત ચલાવીએ છીએ અને એ મિત્રને હાંકી કાઢવાને માટે પ્રાચીન તેમ જ અર્વાચીન વિજ્ઞાનના બધા જ ઈલાજો એવા અજમાવીએ છીએ કે જ્યારે એ સત્યનું વધારેમાં વધારે સ્મરણ રાખવાની જરૂર હોય છે, ત્યારે જ એ સત્યને આપણે તદ્દન વીસરી જઈ એ છીએ. હે દુ:ખથી નહીં પણ અંધકારથી ઘેરાયેલું છે. પ્રકાશ માટે હું પ્રાર્થના કરી રહ્યો છું. સધળા માણસના ભાવિમાં જે લખેલું જ છે તે મારે ભાગ પણ આવ્યું છે, તેની ફરિયાદ હું કેમ કરું ? મારે માટે જરૂર પ્રાર્થના કરજો.” ૩૨૮
