instincts will have survived the period. The princes that will have then led their subjects to a climax of genuine prosperity, a vision of which a foreign Government will have tried in vain to conjure up before their own Indian subjects, will present a divine Spectacle which will make your English Rulers blush with an awakened consciousness of their own inner frailties ! That will be the moment that will call them to the presence of a higher ideal, and I believe that also will be the beginning of an epoch when the Government will see the necessity of looking after your aspirations as if they were your kith and kin and not as your more powerful rivals and competitors. In the existence and growth of the native States, not only are their subjects interested, but the rest of India and its rulers will find to this extent their own fortunes involved.”
વીરરાવ ખુશ થયો અને ઉભો થઈ શંકર શર્માની સાથે હાથ મેળવવા મંડી ગયો અને બોલ્યોઃ
“Thank you, my friend, for having an ideal so beautiful ! I shall now be proud to claim you as my fellow townsman of Bombay."
“ચંદ્રકાંત મિ. શંકરશર્માના સામા મ્હેં જે ઉદ્ગાર કર્યા હતાં તે ખોટા પડયા દેખી હું ખુશ થાઉંછું બાકી આ વિષયમાં તો અમારા બેના અભિપ્રાય પૂર્વ પશ્ચિમમાં સામસામે જ છે એમની આકાશગંગા છે તે સુંદર અને દિવ્ય; પણ તેમાંથી પીવાનું પાણી મળે એમ નથી. It is all Utopia, you see ! મિસ્ટર શંકર શર્મા ! માફ કરજો–

રાણો ખાચર ઘડીયાળ ક્હાડી જોવા લાગ્યો. જોતો જોતો બોલ્યો.
“વિદ્યાચતુરજી, માળાના મણકા તો સારા છે પણ કાંઈક તેને મેર આણો"
