વાર્તાઓનો ક્રમ નથી પણ યોગ્ય ખોરાક છે, તેમ સ્વાભાવિક હાજત મટાડવાનો ઉપાય હાજતની યોગ્ય પરિતૃપ્તિમાં છે. જ્યારે આવી તૃપ્તિથી માણસ વિહોણો રહે છે ત્યારે તેનામાં અનિષ્ટ એવાં આચરણો અને તેને પરિણામે ભયંકર રોગો ફાટી નીકળે છે. પ્રેમકથાઓ એક જાતનો ઉચ્ચ ખોરાક છે. ઊછળતા લોહીમાં વહેતું પ્રેમઝરણ આવી કથાઓથી વ્યવસ્થિત થઈ અમૃતમયી નદી બને છે; પણ જો આ ઝરણાને રોકવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરીએ તો તે ખાલી પ્રદેશ ઉપર એક મોટા નદ જેમ ફેલાઈ જઈ બધું ડુબાવી દે આ સંબંધમાં એક સ્વિસ બાનુના વિચારો પ્રસંગોચિત ગણાશે. એ લખે છે

We cannot change human nature and keep the boy of sixteen from being drawn by a magnet to the maid who is lovely in his eyes, but we can give him an ideal that will make his feeling an elevating thing instead of a debasing one. We can put into the heart of a girl a poetry and idealism that will keep her worthy of a prince; and we can do it through literature. Instead of leaving her free to roam unguided and read whatever falls into her hand or of sitting like a board_of_censors beside her and goading her toward the orbidden which always allures. We can lead her to delightful, wholesome stories, of which there are a goodly number." ૭૩
